We would like to invite you to
'Inquire, Engage, Challenge & Change'
at the third
CILASS Staff-Student Conference
on Inquiry-Based Learning
Friday, 20th March 2009, 10-4, in the Information Commons
Do you want "more" from your education? Do you want to get actively involved in the creation of your own learning? Do you care about the way you study at university?
We are the student ambassadors of the Centre for Inquiry-based Learning in the Arts and Social Sciences (just call it CILASS). We work to bring staff and students together to discuss aspects of inquiry-based learning and teaching.
You may have some experiences, thoughts, or even curiosity to share around inquiry-based learning, and there are four ways you can do this:
The INQUIRE room: What is Inquiry-based Learning (IBL) and how is it used around the univeristy? We're looking for presentations about your experience of IBL.
The ENGAGE room: Can you think of ways to engage others in IBL? We're looking for workshops - re-construct an IBL activity you've had with others, try out an idea... then get discussion going.
The CHALLENGE room: The Russian Roulette of IBL: Your room, your topic, your debate. We want interesting ideas that will get the ball rolling, with you hosting the discussion.
The CHANGE room: No prepared sessions, just a big wall to write down your thoughts and people wanting to chat and ready to listen.
In order to co-ordinate the event, we ask you to put together a 200-300 word proposal and send it to Sabine Little (s.little@shef.ac.uk). Tell us who'll be presenting (staff and/or students), what you want to talk about, and which of the four themes of the conference you feel fits. Sessions will be 50 minutes, with no more than 25 minutes presentation and the rest of the time for discussion.
Why accept this invitation?
Students:
- You get to go beyond the academic requirements of university. By asking for more you can prove to yourself, the university and future employers that you, personally, take an active role in your own education.
- You get a chance to investigate your opinions about what and how you have been doing at universtiy with like-minded people.
- Staff get a chance to engage with you as co-learners, to share your thoughts and ideas, and to discuss inquiry-based learning both within and beyond your discipline.
- Staff get to find out what is happening elsewhere in the institution, how it has been received, and an immediate opportunity to talk about it with you and other staff.
What next?
Anybody can take part! Don't be overwhelmed or confused. Be interested and keen, and send your thoughts to Sabine at s.little@shef.ac.uk, or explore the rest of this site to find out more about CILASS and the Student Ambassador Network.
Ideas should be submitted by the 6th of February 2009. We are happy to receive
proposals from individuals or groups, staff and/or students.
Thanks very much for you time, we look forward to hearing from you.
The CILASS Staff-Student Conference team.
